A patrimonial and picturesque village

Neighbour of Saint-Maurice, Cairanne, Rasteau and Vinsobres, Visan is a village of 1915 inhabitants, situated in the south of the Popes enclave, between the Comtat Venaissin and the Drome province. In this monumentally historical territory, these vineyards, present since the 3rd century, occupy half of the area’s 4107 hectares, and have been producing wine for 700 years. Built during the 13th century, the Our Lady of the Vines chapel has written in its choir this inscription: “posuerunt me custodem in vinoe” “They put me here, guardian of their vineyards…”

Our elders, like us, had the “vanguard soul”

In 1250, Visan had its own communal press where the grapes were taken. Created in 1475 by our winemaker’s ancestors, the Saint Vincent de Visan brotherhood was the very first in the region. Pioneers of the appellation AOC Côtes-du-Rhône, our village joined the appellation on its birthday the 19th of November 1937, and received one of the first communal appellations: Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, in November 1966.

The history of Visan has left a generous heritage

In the village, a nice patrimony from the middle ages to the 18th century. On the landscape side, a robe of vines set in an amphitheater of warm, colourful and bright slopes. The beautiful experience begins on the very first sight of these wine tourism open places.

Populated during the Paleolithic period, founded by a Roman legion, Visan played host to the top of Provencal high-society during the middle ages, such as The Templars of Richerenches, and later came under the ownership of Viennese Prince John II. The village was then a major stronghold. You can still see a few vestiges of the Prince’s Chateau, along with two gates and a part of the fortifications.

From 1327 to 1345, Visan was the mint of Princes, making most notably the golden Florin, silver mark, and old money. Bought by the Holy See of Avignon, Visan became a Papal land for nearly 7 centuries, during which time was built the Pontifical fortification and a group of private renaissance and baroque hotels that today make up the heart of the village. From the 19th to the first half of the 20th century, Visan installed public services and had an important Industrial activity. Today, the village develops thanks to its patrimonial nobility and its great vineyards.
